Roof Replacement

When is it Time for a Roof Replacement?

If you haven’t had noticeable leaks in your home, you may just assume your roof is fine, but aren’t 100% sure when to get it checked out. Here’s a list of reasons to have USA Roofing, your Birmingham roofing contractors, do a full roof inspection:

If your roof is 20 years or older, it’s time for an inspection. Over time, shingles on a shingled roof wear down, become brittle, and even break. The sides of your roof facing East and West are most likely to become weathered since the sun beats down on them for extended periods of time daily. Our weather here in central Alabama can see extreme temperatures in summer and winter. The excessive heat can damage shingles over time, and excessive cold in the winter can make shingles brittle. 20+ years of extreme weather can cause some serious aging. Thankfully, metal roofs aren’t affected as severely. What should you be looking for? Tom Silva’s This Old House says, Look for numerous shingles that are lifting up, cracked or missing, with curled edges, or with smooth dark areas, which indicate that the protective granules have worn off. Most insurance companies will replace the roof over a certain age, but some may choose to pay to repair the most weathered sections.

Damaged Flashing

Roof flashing is a thin sheet of metal, usually galvanized steel, used by roofers to direct water away from critical areas, like where the roof meets a wall or other vertical surface. It’s also installed around vents, chimneys, and skylights. Sometimes, these sheets can become loose or may deteriorate due to weather. How can you tell? Here’s one way to check for possible flashing issues around the chimney and other roof outlets- get into the attic on a bright day with plenty of sunshine and make sure all the other lights are off. If you can see pinpoints of light shining near your chimney or walls, your flashing needs to be replaced as soon as possible, or else you may have leaks the next time it rains. Go ahead and contact us.

Storm damage

There’s always a chance that your roof has some damage after a thunderstorm or other severe weather event. Hail can do major damage to both shingle and metal roofs. Most insurance companies will pay to have hail-damaged roofs replaced or repaired. Falling branches and trees can damage your roof and gutter system. High winds can tear shingles off. Some damage won’t be as noticeable or obvious, but most will be. Don’t wait until you have leaks, go ahead and let USA Roofing, your Birmingham roofing contractors take a look to make sure all the shingles are still there and in good shape.

If we notice a problem while on your roof, we’ll document it by taking pictures then show the pictures to you and explain what we saw. Then it’s time to call your insurance company, who will send out an adjuster. From there, you’ll find out if your insurance company will pay for a full replacement or just repairs. If it’s been a while since you’ve had your roof looked at by a professional roofer, contact us today.
